Black History Month - February 2025
Black History Month - February 2025
The month is dedicated to honoring the legacy of Black leaders, artists, scientists, and activists who have shaped history and culture. It also serves as a time to reflect on the ongoing struggles for racial equality and justice.
Black History Month originated in 1926, when historian Carter G. Woodson established "Negro History Week" to highlight the achievements and contributions of Black Americans. This week was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.
The celebration evolved over the decades, and by the late 1960s, it had expanded to a month-long observance on many college campuses.
In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month, urging Americans to honor the often-overlooked accomplishments of Black individuals throughout history.
This year's theme is "African Americans and Labor.” This theme aims to inspire comprehensive reflections on the connections between the work of Black individuals and their various workplaces, highlighting significant moments, themes, and events in Black history and culture across time and geography.
